Register of lots and land sold but not patented, 1837-1843.

Register (compiled in 1878) lists all town lots and other land previously sold by the Illinois and Michigan Canal Commissioners for which there is no evidence of patent issuance. Entries include tract legal description; original purchaser and current claimant names; explanation of why patents had not been issued; and patent issuance actions taken by canal officials. Usually patents had not been issued because original purchasers failed to make necessary installment payments or because canal employees failed to carry out clerical tasks involved in issuing patents.
